Program Director

About the Opportunity

Alliance for Girls (AFG), the nation’s largest regional alliance of girls’ organizations, seeks a Program Director (PD) who thrives in a fast-paced, growing, team-oriented and collaborative nonprofit environment. This position reports to the Executive Director, and is responsible for the management of Alliance for Girls’ programs including its public-private partnerships, girl leadership initiatives, conferences and events.

Alliance for Girls’ mission is to ensure girl-serving organizations are more connected, more effective and better able to prepare the girls of today to be the leaders, agents of change and thriving women of tomorrow. This mission is achieved through five programmatic strategies: collaboration, training, girl leadership, research and policy advocacy.

(AFG) is transforming the girls’ service sector from one of single-issue organizations to a collaborative and innovative network with the necessary complexity and collective power to holistically meet girls’ needs and eliminate systemic barriers to their success. AFG has a growing membership of more than 100 non-profit organizations serving more than 300,000 girls and young women annually in the San Francisco Bay Area. An economic as well as a social force, AFG members employ 2,500 people, motivate over 6,000 volunteers and have combined annual revenues in excess of $200 million annually.

Duties & Responsibilities

Program Execution

  • Plan and execute the delivery of all AFG programs and  activities in accordance with the mission and goals of the organization

  • Successfully implement long-term goals and objectives of each program

  • Develop and implement curriculum as needed

  • Develop and implement systems to document program activities

  • Maintain appropriate fiscal controls to ensure all programs are within the scope of the annual budget

Program Development 

  • Develop and manage metrics and administrative systems to measure and report on program successes

  • Create and implement replication strategies for successful AFG programs

  • Develop funding proposals to ensure the continuous delivery of services

  • Develop new initiatives to support the strategic direction of the organization

  • Develop and implement communications strategies for each AFG program, to support fulfillment of programmatic and agency-wide objectives

  • Advise the board of directors about programs and policies as appropriate


  • Proven experience as program director or other managerial position

  • Thorough understanding of project/program management techniques and methods

  • Strong writing and communication skills

  • Excellent knowledge of performance evaluation techniques and key metrics

  • Knowledge of data analysis, reporting and budgeting

  • Outstanding organizational skills

  • Willingness to support AFG team members when needed

  • A BA/BS diploma or equivalent experience, MA in public administration, nonprofit administration, public policy or communications is a plus

  • Knowledge of government systems, including school districts, and compliance matters related to government based funding is a plus
