How can we facilitate brave spaces for youth where they can communicate and express themselves authentically?

Expression-Driven Teaching: Facilitating Brave Spaces for Youth is a three-part workshop series led by Alliance for Girls member, The Practice Space. In this series, we will learn about Expression-Driven Teaching, a facilitation method for developing the communication skills and inclusive environment necessary to cultivate youth voice and joy, while also creating opportunities to learn from the voices of young people. Expression-Driven Teaching centers storytelling, poetry, and self-advocacy — each of these skills will be explored during the series.

The workshop will include interactive components such as pair sharing, group/individual feedback, and community story circles where participants can share their learnings out loud. Past community story circles have rooted people in fun activities to practice speaking on the spot through meaningful and thoughtful prompts and improv games, while also preparing listeners to build and affirm speakers. All activities are rooted in joy and safety and inspire a feeling of pride, accomplishment, and self-reflection, with discussions about how people see themselves in one another and learn from diverse experiences.

Our facilitators from The Practice Space include:

  • AnnMarie Baines, Executive Director
  • Diana Medina, Program Coordinator

Specifically, we will:

  • Become familiar with Expression-Driven Teaching, a facilitation method for cultivating and sustaining radically safe environments for youth expression.
  • Practice using the expression modalities of poetry and storytelling to explore identity and process emotions that underpin notions of safety and power.
  • Access technical assistance to support navigation and implementation of tools and practices.
