Community Foundation Santa Cruz County celebrated the launch of the Fund for Women and Girls at the Watsonville Civic Center, with more than 100 supporters in attendance. Guest speaker Emma Mayerson, a 2010 honors grad from Tufts University who founded the Alliance for Girls in 2012, talked about solving problems like high absenteeism in Oakland schools and working with school district officials to draft a new policy on sexual harassment.

The Post News Group reported on Alliance for Girls' report, Valuing Girls Voices: The Lived Experiences Of Girls Of Color In Oakland Unified School District, which amplifies the voices of girls of color attending OUSD schools. The report is bolstering the work of OUSD's Office of Equity and its new African American Girls and Young Women Achievement Initiative.
The blog, Great School Voices, wrote about key findings of Alliance for Girls' report, Valuing Girls Voices: The Lived Experiences of Girls of Color in Oakland Unified School District. While some general issues emerged for all girls, the most challenging data and narratives came around the experiences of young Black women.
Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) issued a press release on the official release of Valuing Girls Voices: The Lived Experiences of Girls of Color in Oakland Unified School District, a landscape study that Alliance for Girls (AFG) commissioned Bright Research Group to conduct. The report details the lived experiences of girls of color, including African American, Latina, Native American and Asian / Pacific Islander girls. AFG and OUSD launched a partnership in 2015 to create policies, practices and programs that better respond to the needs of girls of color.
Emma Mayerson, Executive Director of Alliance for Girls, was interviewed by Vanessa Russell, Founder and Executive Director of Love Never Fails (LNF), on LNF's podcast, Abolition Radio. Through the partnership of 100+ agencies and leaders that Alliance for Girls facilitates, young women can enrich and empower their lives with education, mentoring, the arts and finances. To help them feed in a positive way their passions so that they can turn their dreams to reality.
Seven organizations will have a chance to further their efforts to help girls in or at risk of entering the justice system thanks to more than $650,000 in funding from the National Girls Initiative. Alliance for Girls was among the nonprofit alliances from across the country to be recognized by the initiative, a branch of the federal Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, with its first Innovation Awards.
