Alliance for Girls*, and our 120 member organizations, congratulate President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris on their historic victory. The victory is historic in many ways, not least of which because of the election of the first Black, South Asian, and female Vice President in the nation’s history.
At Alliance for Girls, we know the tremendous power of role models. We know that when girls look up and see a woman who looks like them breaking the highest glass ceiling in the land, her life and sense of possibility is forever changed.
Start your Monday by listening to the real-time reactions of Bay Area young women, our Young Women’s Leadership Board alumnae, to the news:
In her speech on Saturday, Madame Vice President-elect Kamala Harris recognized the milestones we have attained as a nation that enabled this historic victory – women’s suffrage in 1920 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 – and the women, the Black, Asian, Latina, Native American, and white women who make these wins possible.
Generation after generation, women – particularly Black women and women of color – have fought for every reform and leap of progress we have achieved as a nation. Moreover, women have passed the mantle generation to generation, training and supporting young women to achieve their dreams and break glass ceilings. That is the work of every member of Alliance for Girls, to train the more than 300,000 girls and young women we serve annually to achieve their highest ambitions, and lead the world toward a brighter future for all.
There is still so much work to be done. The fight is far from over. But today, Alliance for Girls is celebrating Oakland-native Madame Vice President-elect Kamala Harris’ historic victory, and all the young women and girls who are looking up today and seeing possibility and hope for their future.
