With public orders of sheltering in place being issued in California and beyond, we find ourselves in new situations and ways of being at work, in our families, and in our communities. We know many of you are sheltering in place with children and young people, and may be looking for fun and engaging activities for them.

With a membership of 100+ organizations and professionals who work day in and day out to support girls and gender-expansive youth, Alliance for Girls’ community is teeming with amazing gender-responsive programs and curricula, many of which are being made available virtually for free to girls, their families and educators. We’ve highlighted a few of them below.

Career Girls provides a free noncommercial video platform to amplify the stories of female role models and provide girls of all income levels and ethnic backgrounds an inspirational “real world” context to their academic studies. The platform has 11,000+ video clips from 600+ interviews with diverse and accomplished women role models. These videos are supplemented with guides and toolkits to engage girls in various career fields. Start with a quick video tour.

Girls Leadership equips girls with the skills to exercise the power of their voice, putting social and emotional learning (SEL) at the foundation of all of their leadership development programs. Their resources page includes a variety of activities and guides for online and offline learning, including a book club, videos, and blog filled with helpful tips and tools.

IGNITE trains young women across the country to run for office, building a pipeline of next generation leaders who are poised to flex their political power. They offer discussion guides and toolkits to engage girls in elections and political activities. The guides are segmented by developmental stage, and are for girls and young women of all ages.

Girlstart empowers girls in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) by designing and implementing innovative, high-quality informal STEM education programs that inspire girls to transform our world. Their “Girlstart for Educators” section offers free curriculum, STEM resources, effective messaging tips, collaboration opportunities, and more.

If these activities bring joy and learning to your young people, we hope you’ll consider donating to the above organizations, as well as other organizations and professionals that support girls and gender-expansive youth listed here, to help them respond to the ever-changing reality and continue providing critical services for young people.

Please continue to let us know how else we can support you. We are in this with you, and we will get through this together.
